What sets Loreloom apart
- Everything is free and ad-free: private worlds, secrets, calendars, family trees and full export are not locked behind a subscription.
- Secrets are set participant by participant: each plotline is tied to a context, and each player only sees the contexts you grant them.
- The interface is designed in French first, and available in English.
- The same tool serves for preparing and for playing: character sheets, tabletop, initiative and journals, alongside the Compendium.
When to choose another tool
- World Anvil, if you want to publish your world for a community to read, or use ready-made sheets for more than a hundred game systems.
- Kanka, if you want hosting in the European Union, a Markdown export, or an interface in a language other than English or French.
- LegendKeeper, if you need real-time co-writing or offline work.
- Loreloom does not publish worlds on the web: everything stays private, for invited members only.
What about Obsidian, Notion, Campfire or Fantasia Archive?
These tools often appear in lists of World Anvil alternatives. Not all of them are built for tabletop play: here is what their publishers state, checked on 10 October 2026 on their official websites (prices as displayed, taxes may apply).
- Obsidian: free without limits, with notes stored on your computer as Markdown files and usable offline. Sync costs $4 a month billed yearly, web publishing (Publish) $8 a month billed yearly. No built-in calendar, timeline or family tree: those come from community plugins. A Publish site can't be protected note by note.
- Notion: a free plan, then Plus at €9.50 per member per month billed yearly. Interface available in French, and page-by-page sharing with fine-grained permissions for guests. Its calendar and timeline views rely on real-world dates: no invented calendar.
- Campfire: built for writers, with modules for invented calendars, timelines, maps and relationships (for family trees). A limited free plan (25,000 words, 2 maps, 1 calendar); the Standard plan is shown at $12 a month billed monthly, on promotion from $19. English-only interface, with a desktop app that works offline.
- Fantasia Archive: free and open source (GPL-3.0 licence), installed on your computer and usable offline, English interface. Its latest published release dates from 12 January 2025; a version 2 is in development.
Moving to Loreloom
Loreloom does not yet import exports from other tools: bringing an existing world over is done by hand, article by article. The simplest way is often to start with the region where your table plays, and add the rest session by session.
Common questions about switching
- Can I import my World Anvil or Kanka world? Not yet: moving a world is done by hand. Start with what the next session needs; the rest will follow.
- Do my players have to pay? No. Loreloom is free for everyone; each player creates a free account to join your universe.
- Can I get my data back if I change my mind? Yes: a universe's manager can export it as JSON at any time.
- Can I make my universe public? No: every universe is private, limited to the members you invite. To publish a world on the web, World Anvil remains the better fit.
